Mississauga Tourism Information

Some people think of Mississauga, Ontario as only a suburb of Toronto; however, as Canada's 6th largest city and located on the shores of Lake Ontario, it offers diversity and beauty to make any traveler glad they came to visit. Mississauga is rich with arts, culture and heritage.

The city of Mississauga is bound by Oakville and Milton to the west, Brampton to the north, Toronto to the east, and Lake Ontario to the south. Many people who work in Toronto have chosen Mississauga as a place to live; because of this fact it is one of Canada’s fastest growing cities.

With seven major highways passing through the city, Mississauga offers fast and convenient access to major destinations in Canada and the United States. It is known mainly for Lester B. Pearson International Airport. Canada's busiest airport, it has recently been expanded to include a shopping and dining venue, making it a tourist attraction in its own right.

During the last decades, this lakeshore city has become a transportation and industrial center. It manufactures:

  • Aircraft
  • Motor vehicles
  • Engines
  • Chemicals
  • Petroleum
  • Steel
  • Rubber products
  • Cement
  • Appliances
  • Printed materials

The strong industries in Mississauga are: pharmaceuticals, electronics, computer, chemical and transportation parts and equipment industries. Heavy industry includes the Petro-Canada refinery and St. Lawrence Cement.
Mississauga is home to more than 18,000 companies ranging from corporate head offices and industrial branch operations to corner store retail businesses, and including 50 of Canada's Fortune 500. Mississauga has also provided an ideal environment for small businesses. Many developers have built small multiple units which provide efficient and affordable accommodations for small companies.

In addition, this city also has a port and is the site of Lester B. Pearson International Airport. It’s a relatively new, as Mississauga became a town in 1968 and a city in 1974. Mississauga is a sister city of Kariya, Japan. A part of the Greater Toronto Area, it is the largest lower-tier municipality in Ontario, and is also the largest suburban municipality in North America.

Mississauga offers a range of experiences that keeps visitors coming back again and again. When you come to visit Mississauga, explore its quaint historic villages and stunning architecture, visit the bustling waterfront and lakefront parks, or inspire yourself with Mississauga's world-class art and theatre at the Living Arts Centre.

Take in the energy of the vibrant ethnic neighborhoods. You may want to take the time to visit the Rhododendron Gardens, watch the salmon migration, or shop at Square One - Ontario's largest shopping mall. Take in a round of golf, or relax with a treatment at one of its many spas. Whether you choose an activity-packed weekend or a relaxing getaway, your stay will be memorable here.

Mississauga's skyline is made up of high rise condominiums. Despite its size, Mississauga is thought of by some as a suburb of Toronto and the two cities' urban sprawls are indistinguishably linked. As Toronto has continued to grow economically, Mississauga has followed suit, building predominantly low-density tract housing and high-rise condominiums to attract individuals tired of city life.

At the same time, businesses saw the benefits of locating to Mississauga - low tax rates, proximity to a number of transportation routes (air, rail, road), proximity to Toronto, and an abundance of land (at least, at the time) - and it soon became desirable to locate there.

While being in the top 10 Canadian cities by population, Mississauga has few cultural institutions for a community its size due to its proximity to Toronto. It is by far the largest city in Canada without a daily newspaper (The Mississauga News is three days a week), and currently doesn't have any television stations or commercial radio stations.
Mississauga is beginning to break away from its label as a "bedroom community" to Toronto as 25,000 more workers commute to jobs in Mississauga than leave. Despite this, Mississauga is virtually unknown outside of Ontario.

Mississauga has been trying to create a distinctive image for itself over the past few years. An international architectural design competition was held in 2006 for a 50-story condominium tower that is intended to be a landmark for the city. The winning design, by Chinese architect Yansong Ma of the MAD firm, is a bold, curvaceous tower that was dubbed the "Marilyn Monroe" for its supposed sexiness, and has received much applauding from urban architecture critics. The building is scheduled to be finished by 2010.
